SL-A Series Large Gimbal Mounts

SL-A Gimbal Optical Mounts hold large circular or rectangular optics. Circular optics smaller than the mount's nominal diameter are securely held inside the mount ring by extendible clamp arms. Circular and rectangular optics larger than the nominal diameter may also be attached to the mounting ring with external clamps. For added versatility, a large aperture in the base allows light to pass from below the mount through to the mirror.

605 Series Gimbal Mounts

605 Series Mounts provide gimbaled positioning for 2- and 4-in. (50.8- and 101.6-mm) diameter mirrors. Dedicated adaptors provide mounting for 1- and 3-in. (25.4- and 76.2-mm) diameter optics. The 605 Series gimbal mounts (and their adaptors) are unique because they have  a low stress mirror mounting mechanism to reduce wavefront distortion. The pivot axes employ wobble-free, radial ball bearings and are spring-loaded to eliminate backlash.

SL-A Series 360° Angular Range

Unlimited rotation in pitch and yaw (elevation and azimuth) allow the mount and optic to be oriented in any position in space with true gimbal motion.

605 Series 360° Angular Range

With infinite angular range in pitch and yaw, these mounts can steer a beam in almost any direction. Once the position is set, the 605 Series' fine thread adjusters can provide final alignment.

SL-A Series Direct Mirror Installation

3-in. (76.2-mm) diameter mirrors can be easily installed into SL8A mounts without the need for adapters. This also applies to 6-in. (15.2-mm) mirrors for SL15A mounts and 8-in. (203.2-mm) mirrors for SL20A mounts. Demonstrated in this video is the direct installation of a 6-in. (15.2-mm) mirror into an SL15A mount.

605 Series Mirror Installation

With adapters, the 605 Series can accommodate easy installation of more than one mirror size. The 605-2 comes with 605A-2-1 adapter for 1 in. (25.4 mm) mirrors. The larger 605-4 can hold 3 in. (76.2 mm) mirrors with 605A-4-3 adapter which is sold separately. Both mounts feature a 3-point, low wavefront distortion mirror mounting mechanism.

SL-A Series Mirror Installation with Clamp Arm Adapters

SL-A Series mounts include 3 clamp arm adapters that can be attached to the mirror holder so that it may hold optics smaller than the mount's nominal diameter. This video demonstrates the installation of a 4-in. (101.6-mm) diameter mirror into an SL15A Series mount – whose nominal optic diameter is 6-in. (152.4 mm) – with clamp arms.

Gimbal vs. Non Gimbal Mounts

A gimbal mount has axes of rotation which intersect at the center front surface of the optic. When the mount is adjusted, only the beam's angle changes, not its length. In contrast, a non-gimbal mount will shorten or lengthen a beam path as angle is adjusted.

Your Choice of Actuator

With the SL-A Series Full Rotation Range Gimbal Mirror Mounts, a choice of three types of actuators is offered: adjustment screw, standard micrometer or differential micrometer. The actuators are replaceable.

No Adjuster-Induced Cross-Talk

The adjusters on non-gimbal mounts can cause rotation axes to become skewed from the mounting plane - the main source of cross talk. This won't happen with a Full Range gimbal mount because the axes of rotation always remain true to the mounting plane.

Each SL-A and 605 Series gimbal mount can hold a variety of optics sizes. The table below lists the nominal (also largest) round optics that can be directly mounted, the variable round optics that can be mounted with the included adapters, and the range of optics thicknesses that the mounts can support. The SL-A adapter positions are adjustable due to the slotted design, so a range of optics sizes can be held – for more information, please view our SL-A Mirror Installation with Clamp Arms video.
